The frames are used to hold beeswax sheets or plastic foundation sheets for bees. In that way, the beekeeper can collect honey, beeswax, and bee propolis on the hive frame easily.
Frame construction performs the basic function of holding a sheet of comb foundation in place while the bees draw out a finished comb, and yet it is a sufficiently sturdy rectangle to withstand the rigors of transporting and extracting. The end bars usually have 4 holes drilled to accommodate horizontal wires for additional strength and rigidity and to hold the foundation centered in the frame.
