Smoke both masks the alarm pheromone and alerts the bees, causing them to gorge themselves with nectar or honey, preparatory to abandoning the hive and avoiding the threatening source of the smoke. The result is that they are less apt to sting.
The objective is to produce a maximum amount of cool smoke, and a wide range of fuels continue to be used, largely dependent on whatever is most readily available. Dried sumac heads, cotton mill waste, decayed wood, wood shavings, corn cobs, tightly rolled corrugated paper, grass, or dry pine needles are often used.
